Introduzione e percorso professionale

Introduction and Career Path

I was born in Bern in 1983 and am an architect by profession.

Photography has been a part of my life since childhood, long before I became an architect. When I got my first analog camera, I was hooked. I quickly realized that I could tell stories through images. That’s when I came to understand that photography is a universal language. A language that everyone understands and in which every viewer can discover and interpret their own story.

Whether traveling in the mountains, by the sea, or in cities, with friends or my family, I always had a camera with me. I captured moments, encounters, and stories. For several years now, my camera has been with me almost all the time. Because there are stories to discover everywhere, you just have to be attentive enough to notice them and capture them.

For me, photography is therefore not just about taking a picture. It’s about observing a moment, recognizing a story, and capturing it in an image.

Origins of Passion and Style

I discovered my passion for photography at an early age, when I realised that I could use images to tell stories. I was fascinated by the medium very quickly, perhaps because I never really found my way into writing as a means of expressing those stories. For me, visual language has always felt more intuitive, both in understanding it and in composing it.

I wouldn’t say that I have a very clearly defined style. I find many different genres of photography fascinating and I always enjoy trying new things. Over the past few years, however, my focus has increasingly shifted towards carefully composed street photography, where people and the built environment interact, complement each other, and together create a moment or a story.

One thing that has definitely become established over the years is my preference for black-and-white photography. For about a year now, though, I’ve been trying to explore colour photography more and more. I’m still at the beginning of that journey, so there’s definitely a long way to go.

Photographers who inspire me include Lucien Hervé and Hélène Binet, particularly in the field of architectural photography. I’ve also been strongly influenced by Elliott Erwitt, René Burri and René Groebli. Among contemporary photographers, Phil Penman, Alan Schaller and Fred Mortagne are major sources of inspiration for me. Each of them has influenced me in their own very different way. There are so many talented photographers out there that it’s always difficult to name just a few.

Another very important part of my photography journey is the exchange with friends and fellow photographers. I’m lucky to have a great circle of people around me who share the same passion and with whom I regularly meet – whether it’s for a photowalk, to look at and discuss each other’s images, to exchange ideas and experiences, or simply to sit down over a coffee and talk about photography and life.

For me, this exchange is a constant source of inspiration. Seeing how other photographers approach a scene, what they notice, and how they interpret a moment often makes me look at my own work from a different perspective. I think photography can sometimes be a very personal and solitary activity, which makes these encounters and conversations even more valuable to me.

Projects: City Frames

This series explores the built environment in search of architectural elements that are highlighted by light and create frames in which the human figure reveals the proportions and impact of the architecture.

Through this interplay, the images reveal the tension between architecture, the built environment, and human presence, creating a visual dialogue between people and the city.

At the heart of the series is the interaction between urban structures and human presence.

This series is currently on display at the Haus der Fotografie in Olten as part of IPFO – PHOTOVILLE4600, from August 21 to September 27, 2026.

Continuo quindi a utilizzare entrambi i linguaggi.

Deve riuscire a farci sentire qualcosa.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Salvatore Rinaldi. I am a professional photographer and the owner of Rinaldi Studio Fotografico in the province of Naples.

I mainly specialize in event and wedding photography, but for me, photography goes beyond my daily work. Alongside my professional practice, I pursue a more personal, artistic research through projects inspired by observing reality, people, and the surrounding territory.

It is precisely this dual nature—professional and artistic—that best represents how I experience photography today.

What is your artistic and educational background?

My training began in the arts. I attended the Umberto Boccioni State Art Institute in Naples, earning a Master of Arts diploma with a focus on graphics and visual communication.

Alongside my formal education, my photographic journey was largely self-taught. I always felt the need to experiment, observe, and learn directly through practice.

I didn't have a single master who shaped my path. Rather, my development was a continuous accumulation of images, experiences, mistakes, and experimentation.

Over the years, professional photography led me to work primarily in events and weddings, while in parallel, I strove to build a more personal body of work to express what I feel and observe.

How and when did your passion for photography begin?

Photography entered my life very early, when I was about ten years old, when my mother gave me my first camera—a Yashica film camera.

At the time, I couldn't have known how significant that gift would become. I mostly remember the curiosity: taking photos meant stopping something that would otherwise disappear.

Over time, I realized I wasn't just interested in taking pictures, but in understanding what lay behind an image. It was a gradual journey of trial and error, film, observation, and study.

I believe photography truly became my path when I stopped viewing it purely as a technique and started using it as a way of looking at the world.

How would you describe your photographic style?

I don't like to define my style with a single label.

My photography stems mainly from observing people and places. I am interested in telling the story behind appearances: emotions, vulnerabilities, contradictions, and the traces people leave in the spaces they inhabit.

In my professional work, I aim to provide a memory, but in my personal projects, I seek something different: images that ask questions, evoke feelings, or leave an impression on the viewer.

This is also why black and white, film, and a pursuit of essentiality continue to hold great value for me.

Which photographers have influenced your style?

I don't think I can point to a single photographer as an absolute reference. Over the years, I have been influenced by different visual languages, particularly documentary and introspective photography.

Rather than trying to imitate a creator, I always tried to understand why a particular photograph worked: the composition, light, timing, distance from the subject, and above all, what that image communicated.

I believe the most important influences are the ones you eventually stop consciously recognizing in your work because they have simply become part of how you see.

What was your first photography project?

My first approach to project-based photography grew from the need to move beyond single images.

For a long time, I shot on instinct without thinking about a series. Eventually, I began to ask myself what would happen if I brought together photos connected by a common idea.

It was an important transition: I realized that a project isn't just a collection of pretty pictures, but something that needs direction, coherence, and something meaningful to say.

Which project are you most proud of?

Among the projects closest to my heart is Soglia ("Threshold").

It arose from a desire to address violence against women not through explicit representation, but through what remains before, during, and after: the fear, silence, loneliness, fragility, and the invisible line separating one state from another. The title itself represents this transition.

It's a work I deeply value because it forced me to confront not only photography, but also the responsibility of addressing a sensitive topic.

Another project I am deeply attached to is Terra Nera ("Black Earth"), dedicated to the territory of Acerra. It explores the relationship between land, memory, and transformation, born from a need to document a place I know and that belongs to my own story.

Digital or analog: what is your relationship with these two mediums?

I don't view them as opposing worlds.

Digital offers speed, control, technical capabilities, and great freedom in my professional work. It is an extraordinary tool, and ignoring its possibilities today would be impossible.

Film, on the other hand, demands a different relationship with photography. Shooting film means making choices. You have a limited number of frames; you must wait, observe, and take responsibility for every frame.

I continue to use both languages. I still own and use analog cameras, including Nikon and Hasselblad systems, alongside my daily digital gear.

For me, it isn't about which technology is superior. The question is always: Which tool best serves the story I want to tell?

Has the digital era and the decline of analog changed photography?

Digital has certainly transformed the way we photograph.

It made photography immediate, accessible, and technically far simpler. Today, we can take hundreds of images in minutes and check them instantly.

However, I feel this convenience has led to a loss of the ritual of photography.

With film, there was a physical relationship with the image: you loaded the roll, shot, waited for development, and only then discovered the result.

I don't believe digital has impoverished photography itself—it has simply changed the context.

What we risk losing isn't film, but the ability to wait.

Everyone takes photos today, but when do you truly become a photographer?

In my view, buying a camera doesn't make you a photographer any more than buying an instrument makes you a musician.

A camera is merely a tool. You become a photographer when you begin to develop your own vision.

To me, becoming a photographer means learning to observe before you even press the shutter. It means understanding why you are taking a photo and what you want to communicate through it.

A great photograph isn't necessarily technically perfect.

It can be blurry, flawed, noisy, or even "wrong" by traditional criteria. But if it communicates something, holds the viewer's gaze, and continues to resonate in their mind long after looking away, then it has achieved its goal.

Photography shouldn't just show something; it should make us feel something.

Advice for young photographers:

My advice to a young photographer is not to rush to label yourself a photographer.

We have extraordinary tools available today, but owning gear and knowing technique doesn't mean you have a story to tell.

Shoot a lot, but above all, look a lot. Study the history of photography, observe the work of others, read, visit exhibitions, print your photos, and learn from your mistakes.

Most importantly, seek your own voice.

Don't try to make photos just to please others. Figure out what you have to say through your camera.

Technique can be learned, gear can be bought, and trends will fade.

Your vision is the only thing that makes a photograph uniquely yours.

Oggi sono tornato all'essenza.

Quali storie vuoi raccontare?

Andrej Tarkovskij, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Olga Karlovac, Mario Giacomelli, Fan Ho, Stephan Vanfleteren.

Quale progetto vorresti presentare?

Enter the Residue (Entrare nel residuo).

Who are you and what do you do?

I was born as Michel Engelen.

In my daily life, I work in industrial maintenance and software solutions. When that world quiets down, I become a photographer.

What was your educational and artistic background?

I never received a formal artistic education. Most of my studies were related to the hard sciences.

However, education never really stops. I read extensively, collaborated with other photographers, attended workshops, and spent countless hours experimenting with different techniques and approaches.

Most of my artistic education happened behind the camera.

How and when was your passion for photography born?

Probably not when I bought my first camera.

My passion truly began when I realized that certain images I had created made me feel something.

At one point, photography became almost obsessive. I worked so intensely that I eventually had to step away from it for a few years.

The photography virus was absolutely consuming me.

When I returned, my relationship with photography had changed completely.

How would you describe your photographic style?

In the past, I created many commercial images and also worked in documentary photography.

Today, I have returned to the essence.

I no longer photograph subjects.

I photograph what remains after the encounter has ended.

What subjects do you portray?

I have gradually moved away from the word subject.

For me, photographing a subject often suggests representing something as realistically as possible.

Of course, I still photograph trees, landscapes, shadows, structures, water, and people.

But I prefer to think of my work as photographing a state or a resonance that emerges between the observer and the observed.

Sometimes that representation is realistic.

Sometimes it becomes highly abstract.

What stories do you aim to tell?

I am interested in stories that are still unfolding.

The beginning and the end rarely interest me.

I am fascinated by the in-between state, the moment when something has not yet fully taken shape.

I often compare it to getting on a bicycle without actually starting to ride.

That moment of potential interests me much more than the action itself.

What equipment do you use?

I use a Pentax K10D, a Rolleiflex TLR, and a Fujifilm GFX, together with a small collection of old prime lenses.

For me, the camera is simply a recording device.

The image happens in the mind long before the shutter is pressed.

Presence is far more important than equipment.

Which photographers have influenced your style?

Andrei Tarkovsky, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Olga Karlovac, Mario Giacomelli, Fan Ho, Stephan Vanfleteren, Beyond photography, Carl Jung and the Zen teachings traditionally attributed to Bodhidharma have profoundly influenced the way I perceive both life and image-making.

Which project would you like to present?

Enter the Residue.

This project explores what remains after an encounter between different forms of energy.

Light passing through leaves.

A person suspended between two states.

Water transformed by light.

Clouds constantly changing their shape.

The photographs are not intended to document reality.

They are traces.

They are the residue of an encounter.
